Plant of the Month - Petunias

Posted on September 18, 2019 at 9:54 AM by Samantha Thomas

Are you looking for an excellent fall addition to your home’s landscape? Petunias are an excellent choice for this time of year! These versatile flowers can be potted or planted directly into the soil, which helps to add beauty to your home inside or out.

Petunias have a tough time withstanding our brutal summer heat, but flourish in direct sunlight, making them perfect for Arizona’s warm fall weather. These flowers will require watering more often than a typical desert plant but you must be careful not to over-water. Your soil should be monitored to ensure that it is not overly moist or dry.

With proper care, these large plants grow to be at least 12 inches and should be able to hold their blooms through the season. After blooming, the dead blooms should be removed completely, as opposed to waiting them fall off naturally. This allows for new blooms to grow unobstructed in the spring.

Petunias come in a variety of colors like red, white, pink and yellow and are available from most nurseries and home improvement stores.
