It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Peoria Fire-Medical Department Retired Captain David Rehnke. Dave has succumbed to his 10-year battle with Renal Cell Carcinoma. Dave’s death is considered a line-of-duty death caused by occupational cancer. Dave was hired in 1989, promoted to Engineer in 1996, promoted to Captain in 2008 and Retired in 2015. Dave retired as a Captain but made his mark as an Engineer. As an Engineer Dave set the bar by which other Engineers were, and are, measured. He was meticulous about every detail of his apparatus, all the equipment on it, and the safety of the personnel in it.
During his ten year battle with cancer Dave fought for every firefighter in Arizona to work smarter, and safer, and to be covered by Arizona’s presumptive cancer statute. Arizona currently recognizes seven occupational cancers related to firefighting.
Losing Dave we lost a great person and a beloved family man. Dave Rehnke is survived by his wife of 30 years, Brenda, his daughter Shannon, and his son Dustin. The Peoria Fire-Medical Honor Guard will stand watch over Retired Captain Dave Rehnke until he is brought to his final resting place.
The family has requested donations be made to The Firefighters Cancer Awareness Support Network in lieu of flowers.
